Loki, one of the Æsir and Odin's blood-brother. He personified fire and was clever but mischievious and malicious, and an opponent of the gods as well as their companion. Loki has 3 children with the giantess, Angrboða: The Midgard's serpent or Jormungandr, whom the gods threw into the sea as a baby, and who has grown to circumvent the whole of the earth. At Ragnarok, Þór and the serpent will kill eachother; The Fenris wolf, who was adopted by the gods, until it grew to large and viscious. Týr, the god of war, lost his arm when the gods tried to chain the wolf. It will remain chained until Ragnarok, where it will break free and swallow Oðinn; and Hel, the goddess of the underworld or Niflheim, where those who died in the sick bed or in other "dishonorable" ways dwell. Loki is also married to the goddess Sigyn, with whom he has two sons, Narfi and Vali. When the gods capture Loki, after figuring out his part in the death of Baldur, Loki is bound to a cave with the intestines of his son, Narfi, and a serpent is hung above his head. The poison from its fangs drip down into Loki's forehead, so his wife, Sigyn, sits by his side with a bowl collecting the poison. Once in a while, she must get up to empty the bowl, and in those moments the poison hits Loki and the earth shakes and rumbles with his pain. Original print by Icelandic artist, Haukur Halldorsson.
