Fjallkonan or The Lady of the Mountain is the personification of Iceland. She is first mentioned in the 19th c. poem Eldgamla Ísafold by Bjarni Thorarensen. Today she is a symbol of Iceland as a nation, and every year on Iceland's National Independence Day (17th of June) a woman is chosen as "Fjallkona". She is part of the main parade through town and will usually read a poem aloud to the gathered masses.
